Things To Wactch Out For At Car & Truck Auctions

If you're planning on buying a used car at an auto auction, there are a number of things to watch out for.  While the majority of cars at an auto auction are valid, you shouldn't be surprised to find stolen cars and other scams.  Keep these things in mind as you browse the cars at an auto auction.  It is absolutely necessary to run a VIN number/car history report before making any bids.  You can't always tell the history of the car just by looking at it.

The first thing to watch out for at an auto auction is the stolen car scam.  Crooks will buy a wrecked luxury vehicle on the cheap and launder the title from "junk" to "rebuilt."  They will then steal an identical luxury vehicle, swap the VIN numbers, and sell the stolen luxury vehicle at auction as a used car.  The second scam is the airbag fraud scam.  As we all know, insurance companies pay for auto accident damages including airbag repairs.  Many unscrupulous mechanics will keep the monies designated for a replacement airbag, and put in stuffing or packaging material instead.  It's nearly impossible to check for the air bag at an auto auction.  Nonetheless, you can look up a vehicle history report to check for any past car accidents which will indicate if the airbag was deployed.  Smart bidders will always bring a Blackberry device, laptop computer, or will have someone by a computer who can check vehicle histories and ensure that you get a great deal!
